Creativity Wins

Why Getting Creative With Your Kids Is One of the Best Things You Can Do

If you’ve ever watched your small human losing themselves in a drawing, a doodle, or a burst of colour, you’ll know there’s something magical about art time. But here’s the brilliant bit: that magic isn’t just fun - it’s genuinely good for them.

Art gives children (and us adults!) a safe space to explore, make mistakes, and express themselves freely. When they sketch, paint, cut, glue or build, they’re actually developing all sorts of skills that support their learning at school and out in the big wide world too.

Confidence? Absolutely.

When kids create something that’s theirs it boosts self-esteem. They learn that their ideas matter and gives them a way to voice these ideas that might otherwise be left unexpressed. Even better, art teaches them to try again if something doesn’t work out - a superpower for school and life.

Co-ordination & motor skills? You bet.

Cutting shapes, colouring inside lines (or joyfully outside them!), and experimenting with different materials strengthens hand-eye co-ordination and fine motor skills. These use the same muscles and are the same skills they use for handwriting, using tools, and even sports.

Critical thinking & problem–solving? Oh yes.

Art asks children to make decisions: Which colour? What shape? How do I make this stand up? This kind of open-ended thinking builds resilience and creativity – two things teachers absolutely love to see in the classroom.

And let’s not forget emotional wellbeing.

Art gives an outlet for feelings they don’t always have words for. It's also a great way to release any stresses of the day; giving the mind a few minutes to just decompress and have nothing being asked of them makes a huge difference. A little creativity at home can help them relax, unwind, and feel more secure.

The best part? You don’t even need fancy supplies. Pens, pencils, a glue stick and some scrap paper are more than enough to get started. Sit down together, make a mess, follow their lead, and enjoy the moment. You’ll be amazed at what they create - and how much they grow in the process. You might do a little growing yourself!

So this week, carve out a little creative time. It might look like fun (and it will be!), but behind the scenes, you’ll be supporting their confidence, coordination, and curiosity… all while making memories you will all treasure.
